10 Ways to Reignite the Spark in Your Career
After you’ve been working for a while, it can be tough to keep the passion alive. You may have started out bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but if you’re like the rest of us, eventually you’ll hit a slump. This is especially tough in the business world because your career thrives on energy and enthusiasm. It can begin to feel like you will never get that passion back again.
Thankfully, all is not lost. Here are 10 easy ways to put the spring back in your step and find your fire again!
1. Write It Out
Sometimes we get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Take some time to sit down and really think about how you’re feeling. Whenever I’m overwhelmed and confused, I start with a list.
Note the pros and cons of your job, and figure out what’s out of your control and what you can change… and then change it!
Having everything laid out on paper makes it far less scary, and gives you a game plan for how to approach problems.
2. Take a Trip Down Memory Lane
Think back to who you were when your career journey started. Did you ever think that you would be where you are today? Really reflect on how hard you’ve worked and how far you’ve come. Try writing a letter to your past self, detailing everything you’ve achieved – and pat yourself on the back.
3. Define Your Goals
Just as important as remembering where you’ve come from is envisioning where you’re going. If you’ve lost your fire, it may be because you’ve become stagnant in your journey. Everyone needs a break from hustling, but it’s important to re-align your focus and set your sights on the things you want to achieve. Not only will it remind you of why you started in the first place, but it will motivate you to get back into your rhythm.
4. Start the Day Right
It’s easy to roll out of bed and munch on some toast while you rub the sleep out of your eyes, but it doesn’t make for a particularly inspiring day. Get a head start in the morning by waking up half an hour earlier, doing some stretches or listening to your favourite playlist while preparing a breakfast feast. It might be tough at the start, but your future self will thank you!
5. Spice Up Your Workspace
Put your Pinterest gloves on and revamp your station. It’s something small, but adding some extra little details can turn a claustrophobic desk into a space that you love working in. Add some special pictures, a plant or two, or – if you’re like me – a jar of jellybeans. Make it work for you and you’ll want to keep coming back.
6. Schedule Time Out
Often when we’re slogging through the day it’s because there is no end in sight. Making time for yourself to relax is essential for motivation, energy and overall happiness. Leave your work at the office and spend some time reading, baking or seeing loved ones. Try and stay away from your phone and computer during this period – I love the internet as much as anyone else, but constantly chatting and checking notifications is a job in itself. If you can look forward to designated chill time, you’ll find that your day isn’t so scary after all.
7. Pick Up a Hobby
A great way to put the spring back in your step is to find a new passion. Especially if you’re struggling to find your motivation at work, it can really help to throw yourself into something different and remember how great it is to learn some new skills. Whether it’s drawing, joining a local sports club or painting tiny figurines, an extra-curricular activity is a great way to reset your mind and make your day exciting again.
8. Connect with Your Colleagues
Tackling something is always easier if you have a team behind you. It’s really important to build friendships with your co-workers that extend beyond the coffee-machine. Try starting a new tradition like drinks on a Friday night or a morning catch-up with the team to bring your crew closer together. You’ll get to make new friends and share in the challenges of your job. Misery loves company, but so does happiness, motivation, and success.
9. Get Networking
Socialising can take a lot of mental energy, but if you’re looking for a way to re-motivate yourself, meeting other people in your field is a game-changer! Not only will you form connections that could offer new opportunities, but you’ll get to interact with people that are in the same boat as you. Sharing goals and gripes will remind you that you’re not alone in this, and there are tons of people working to keep the fire alive.
Meeting inspirational entrepreneurs can remind you of where you want to go and what you want to achieve, re-invigorating your passion for what you do.
10. Learn Something New
There is always space to expand your expertise and explore different aspects of your career. Not only will you be able to find new opportunities and expand your CV, but you might discover a completely new avenue that you hadn’t considered before.
