If you’re feeling underwhelmed with your to-do list, whether personal or professional, perhaps it’s time to reboot! This doesn’t mean going on a sabbatical (although if this is what you need, go for it!) but it’s important to take small steps to achieve effective change.

What better way than to make use of science-backed steps to give yourself a fresh start!

1. Visualise your best-case scenario

Day-dreaming might have been frowned on once upon a time back in school. Today, however, we’re encouraging it! There have been studies that show that the brain doesn’t differentiate between a real memory and an imagined one. With a vivid imagination, your brain might believe the scenario. You’ll develop the self-confidence and belief needed to achieve your visualisation.

2. Read to inspire

Another childhood nugget: always read! Reading is one of the best hobbies to take into adulthood because it has a profound effect on your brain. Not only does it reduce stress (which is always a bonus!) but studies have confirmed that it can actually rewire your brain. According to a study by Carnegie Mellon scientists, active reading alters the brain tissue.

Perhaps you’ll start picking up a new passion by stocking your bookcase.

3. Do what you love

A great way to build your self-confidence is to do something you love. In fact, there is scientific proof showing that you’ll live longer. Having a passion project probably points out that you’re excited about doing something, which could result in a career change to align with it.

Not sure what your passion is? Do some research into courses that may interest you or brainstorm your dream career

4. Reboot your calendar

The reason why you might need a fresh start is that you’re repetitively doing the same thing. To combat this, take a look at your calendar and change or add new things. Perhaps on Monday, schedule time for an activity you haven’t done in a while – this could be reading, exercising, or learning a new skill. A change in routine can help provide a fresh start and could possibly inspire you.

5. Learn something new

According to a Cornell University study, learning a new skill can increase your brain activity and expand your mindset. By developing or refining your skills, you also create an attitude that will encourage you to believe you can do anything!

After deciding that you want to learn something new, you are faced with choosing what to learn. Maybe you’ve been curious about marketing or you’d like to learn something about leadership. Whatever it is you want to learn, there are dozens of online courses that can help you get a fresh start.

6. New day, new opportunities

From the moment we wake up, we’re already thinking about tomorrow or the rest of the week. It’s enough to fill you with anxiety and have you feeling defeated before the week is over.

Instead, wake up and think of the new day as a new opportunity for a fresh start.

7. Manage your regrets

We’re often told to not live in the past but sometimes our regrets can serve as a lesson.

According to New Yorker writer Kathryn Schulz, looking back could help you move forward.

8. Create your own Personal ‘Board of Directors’

Your parents probably told you to surround yourself with good people. This advice will always remain relevant. According to studies, having strong-willed individuals in your social circle can help with your self-control and discipline. We’re not saying you should dump your current group. Rather look to expand your circle. Perhaps, look to your work network and seek out friends in the office to include in your network.

9. Get some sleep

Living for the ‘hustle’ is often glorified, with people frequently complaining about the minimal hours of sleep they get while wearing it like a badge of honour. However, studies state that a lack of good sleep could lead to mental health problems and lack of productivity. So, get in those eight hours of sleep and get ready to start tomorrow anew.

10. Talk yourself into a fresh start

Like visualisation, the more you tell yourself about a fresh start, the more your brain will believe it. Suddenly your mindset will shift and you’ll do what it takes to give your life a boost.
