Entrepreneurship vs Working For A Company

entrepreneurship vs working

Is it better to work for yourself or work for a company? It’s a lively debate had at many dinner tables, with no concrete answer. There are great benefits when it comes to working for yourself and better rewards when working for a company. Let’s take a look at the advantages for both cases to help you decide on which works best.

Making a case for the entrepreneur

The unemployment rate in South Africa sits at 26.6%. While this is not the most favourable number for our economy, the number has improved steadily – due in part to the steady entrepreneurship activity.

Entrepreneurs are ‘jack of all trades’. If they’re working by themselves – especially starting out – they’ll need to be experts in finance, project management, and really know how to build a network. Some love entrepreneurship because it offers:

Independence

How many times have you sat at your desk and thought about how different you would approach a project? Entrepreneurs live for this type of freedom because they have the chance to build something the way they want to and have their own direction. An entrepreneur gets to decide if they want to work solo or if they want to hire a small team.

Building your own business also means building your own company culture. You get to decide on the work environment that is most comfortable for you. If you do decide to start hiring, you can employ people who are comfortable with your company culture.

Flexibility

Some people work better in the morning while others feel more productive during the evening. As an entrepreneur, you have the freedom to decide for yourself. If you feel like sleeping in during the day, maybe go for a run, and work the ‘night shift’ – then that’s perfect! Some entrepreneurs like to get an early start and unwind during the afternoons. This is especially ideal if you have a family.

With the right resources, you can have optimum flexibility that some workplaces won’t allow. If you’re in need of a rest day – to avoid burnout and proper work/life balance – you’re allowed to do so without any hassle.

Growth

Being an entrepreneur means that you’re involved in all facets of your business – marketing, finance, HR, etc. This allows you to develop your skills professionally and personally. The entrepreneurial journey is a continuous learning curve and it’s skills that you won’t necessarily get to learn in any other position within an organisation.

Making a case for the employee

The 9-5 lifestyle has been getting a lot of hate but with more companies offering flexible hours, people are enjoying heading to work in the morning. The workforce is getting younger, which means employers are more aware that they need to tend to their employees’ wellbeing, in order to boost productivity.

The ‘9-5 employment’ environment has the following advantages:

Work/life balance

As mentioned before, employers are more aware that employees’ wellbeing should be at the forefront. You work a set of 8 hours during the day and thereafter, you get to go home and enjoy the rest of your day until the next morning. Unlike most entrepreneurs, weekends are for family time, which allows you to switch off for a few days until you have to pick it up again on Monday.

Stable income and benefits

You know your monthly income – it stays the same. You’re never left guessing if this month you’ll have a decrease compared to the previous month. With a stable income, it’s easy to set a budget and savings. Most companies also offer benefits (medical aid, pension, petrol allowance, etc.) which doesn’t take too much out of your income.

Camaraderie

You’re spending eight hours with a group of people who come from different walks of life. This type of exposure in the work environment is great and helps you grow as a person. In fact, some of your best friends are made in the workplace. They’ve been in the trenches with you and celebrate all your wins. A work friendship is often the best because these people will encourage you on an off day.

While entrepreneurship is often glorified, the working environment is also changing. What you choose is entirely dependent on your personality. Either way, you have the chance to develop a professional skill-set.

Embrace online education and earn while you learn

study while you work

Reach success by overcoming your fears

You’re reading this because you want to change your life completely, achieve your dreams and reach success. Life has presented you with another one of its unique opportunities and you’re stuck in the mud. If you want to overcome your fears and reach success there’s one golden thread that runs constant, you have to follow your heart and be brave.

Letting go to overcome fear

Your fear is completely normal but it is not real. Your mind is more powerful than anything that you’ve ever encountered. It’s time you start relying on your own critical thinking and intuition to reach your goals. Starting up and setting yourself up for success requires you to dig deep and step outside of your comfort zone.

People fear the unknown because the material comforts of daily existence define their lives and give them a sense of purpose. If you want to reach success, you need to follow your heart and start envisioning your own purpose for life, through bold actions that disrupt the general status quo. Keep reading to obliterate your fear and for useful steps to reach success in life and in business.

Block negativity out

You need to start treating negativity like a light prism. Refract negative energy and start seeing the positive benefits in what you as a individual have to offer the world. Share your ideas and thoughts with people constantly. Stand up for what you believe in and have the courage of your convictions. Remember that constructive feedback is always useful but never allow anyone to bring your thoughts or ideas down in life.

It’s often all too easy to get caught up in the hype of negative energy. Influences like co-workers, family and friends can have a huge impact on your daily psyche. If you remain in the funnel with the same attitude then nothing changes. Step out of the washing drum, rinse off negativity and embrace yourself to reach success.

Jealousy only makes you nasty

Yes jealousy can be apart of the fear holding you back from reaching your dreams and achieving success in your personal life and business. People fear what others think about them because we are naturally programmed to impress and please. Let go of people that hold you back and bring you down.

People’s jealousy should be used as a tool to empower your thoughts and make you stronger. The only way to reach success is to ignore jealousy and let it be the fertilizer for your flowers that are about to bloom.

Take a giant leap not just a step

Yes, we have all heard the age old saying; baby steps. Changing your life and starting an amazing journey is all about courage. You might be thinking that you will treat your idea as a sideline project until it grows into something bigger. Perhaps you are perfecting the recipe for success. Nothing is achieved by dawdling.

Your initiative must walk hand in hand with your passion. Leap at the opportunity to change your life,  achieve your goals and reach success. Of course there are steps to follow to reach success, just be more radical about your approach and you could find yourself in the driver’s seat of your own destiny sooner than you think.

Time is valuable, don’t waste it

As mentioned earlier; dawdling won’t accomplish much. There is never that optimal moment to reach success in life. You have to grab it. With a little bit of faith and courage you must make a plan to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace a new you.

Time is the most valued asset on this planet. Don’t waste it. You only get to be on this planet once. Make the most of your time and live life on your own terms, for ultimate success in your personal life and business.

Intuitive people do things differently, find out what

intuitive people

The Dictionary defines intuition as: the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning./A thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning. Intuitive people understand this process more naturally than those people with less intuition.

It was Steve Jobs that said:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.”

People tend to believe we are born and whatever we become has been a planned series of events leading up to a grand life, well lived. The scientific community argue this point down and stress that you are in control of the major decisions in your life. There is a slight problem with this conception though, the scientific community can’t quite say why certain people are blessed with a better ‘gut feeling’, otherwise known as intuition over others who don’t possess as much of the skill.

Life is like a paint by numbers kit, paint it

We tend to foster our own path in life like a paint by numbers kit. We pick the colours from our choices and live with the creation of our consequences. Humans love living in the moment and when we reflect, we get a grander sense of what this life is all for. We start challenging convention and start to ponder the differences between intuition vs intellect and all the primitive brain can do is greet you with a maze of unanswered questions.

Research suggests that certain people are instinctively more intuitive than others. Whether it be in a game of chance or buying a car, your intuition plays a role in the final outcome. If you have ever been in a state of mindfulness, pondering about this very topic, then you may be surprised to learn that there are certain things that deeply intuitive people do differently to your average Joe’s. Keep reading to see what highly intuitive people are doing to hone their lives and live within an analytical mind, creating a natural system of checks and balances that advances their critical thinking skills daily.

Intuitive people listen out for their inner voice

Before you can even conceive the notion of intuition you need to be able to recognise it. Intuition is not as clear as body language or tone of voice. It’s a deep seeded awareness that makes your gut feeling sway towards positive or negative associations. This takes some time, especially in today’s fast paced life where we rush to do absolutely everything. You need to stop, steer and observe in order to hear your inner voice. Let it shine through and guide you towards your desired goals.

You’ve heard it, now follow it

Don’t think you have what it takes? One of the most common reasons why some people are more intuitive than others is because they actually listen to themselves instead of being driven by ideology. This is not to say that one should completely ignore the analytical mind, or critical thinking skills. Rather embrace intuition and incorporate it into your lifestyle. Listen out for your inner voice and then follow it rationally with instinct and confidence.

Practice empathic accuracy for better intuition

You might just roll over into your grave if we told you that deeply intuitive people can read your mind. Even though this is not the case, intuition is like a reading that can be deduced from certain cues that people give off without even knowing it. Empathic accuracy is the fancy scientific way of saying that you can ascertain certain knowledge from people simply by analysing their body language or tone of voice. Intuitive people are gathering data all the time listening, observing and reading people for a holistic overview on how to approach a situation dynamically.

Practice mindfulness to be more intuitive

Mindfulness is not some gimmicky new age paradigm shift that allows you to become a more spiritually connected person. It’s easy to be mindful. You simply need to cut out all the distractions in your life and take some time for yourself. Go for a walk, sit on the beach with your thoughts, take a power nap. Contemplate life, don’t let life contemplate you. Go after what you want with a clear head and an honest heart and you will have reached a state of mindfulness honing your intuition skills.

Nurturing your creativity can lead to better intuition

As mentioned earlier in this post; life is like a paint by numbers kit. No one is trying to reinvent the wheel and turn art into science here, yet it is the reality. Life is an art and the science in the art plays an integral part in how you build your demeanour. You can’t just spot a colour and hope for the best outcome. Your intuition and foresight play a role in what the final image will look like. The same applies to your intuitive skills. You need to practice and nurture your own inherent creativity to paint your life’s masterpiece and guide your future decisions.

Create your own destiny with intuition

Intuition may not be present in your life currently, however, with these insightful tips on what deeply intuitive people do better than most average Joe’s, you too can live a life where you make better decisions daily. Keep checking back on our blog page for more mindful superpowers that can help you reach ultimate success in life.

Project engineer: Nico Jackson

A day in the life of-human-resource-management-online-course

USB-ED Operations Management online short course testimonial.

Nico grew up on a farm and attended Agricultural School. His less than domestic upbringing saw him entering into the challenging and fascinating realm of Industrial Engineering. He graduated in 2002, but saw the need to keep himself relevant in a world that is constantly changing and is currently a Project Engineer at Parmalat Head Office in Stellenbosch.

Everyone has the desire to improve their quality life.

Nico felt the same and enrolled in the Project Management online short course from MasterStart, to shift from middle management to senior management. He says that “ The Operations Management course provides a solid foundation and gives a good understanding for the requirements at senior management level”.

More and more people are opting to study online, as work consumes the majority of their time. For Nico, the choice was simple. He said that the benefits of this course were tremendous: “Very flexible, never interfered with my work or my daily routine. Participants are able to complete the course late at night when nothing else requires your attention.”

Dreaming of career growth and success? Life is a never-ending journey and if you are not learning, it means you simply aren’t growing. Nico believes that this online short course was a drastic step towards future success. He says: “The course definitely helped me to mature in the work environment and taught me great skills, which I already use in my current position.”

Nico is a firm believer in remaining calm.

He is adamant, if you stick to your notes, remain calm and stress less, the course certification is achievable. He also adds that further investigation on the internet can enhance your overall understanding of a question and its relevant answer. This is the attitude that is going to help Nico reach his career goals. He says that he would like: “To complete a further leadership course and to register as a Project Management Professional”.

Nico understands the dynamic of the South African workforce, he knows that: “Career opportunities are limited, so distinguish yourself from others, make it count.” This strong mental attitude has led Nico to career growth and success, despite being a father to two small children, which require heaps of his time and energy daily.

We are living in a new world and we need to constantly engage with the world to stay up to date in our chosen fields and industries. Nico admits that even though this was his first online experience, it was very important for him to set a career president. This, in turn, will see Nico undertaking more online courses in the future.

Entrepreneur extraordinaire: Online Participant, Kim Messina

USB-ED Human Resource Management online short course testimonial.

After completing high school, Kim pursued her studies in Food technology. However, as many of us can attest to, life doesn’t always take us along our planned path. Kim currently runs a successful business with her husband and they have a son Josh, who keeps them on their toes.

She recognised early on in life, that in order to reach her full potential, both personally and in business, she needed to stay current and keep her skills relevant. She, therefore, undertook a course in Human Resource Management, as she currently looks after all the HR and Payroll requirements for their business, as well as handling the account management of the businesses top clients.

We asked Kim what some of the benefits of studying online allowed her in her daily routine:

“Working full time and being a mum, I needed the flexibility that studying online gave me”. Studying online allowed Kim to keep running her business and spend important time with her family, all whilst gaining new skills.

Kim describes herself as a real hard worker that tries to please everyone! A natural born human resource practitioner, it seems. She was delighted with the fact that the online course gave her real-time, practical working skills that she could implement within her daily tasks almost immediately. She is striving for very specific goals now and said that she would ultimately like to place the perfect staff member within their business to achieve maximum productivity.

It wasn’t all roses and sunshine though, as she explains learning while working can be challenging.

This was Kim’s first online learning experience; she says it’s vital for anyone that wants to study online to “plan everything ahead of time and allow for extra time if necessary”. She also added that many distractions on the internet were a concern for her.  MasterStart’s unique course structure, with weekly tasks and assignments helped her to become diligent and concise. What drove her the most was her desire to prove to herself that she can achieve her Stellenbosch University certificate.

Being an extremely busy lady, Kim, unfortunately, has no time for any hobbies at the moment. She does insist that she would definitely take the opportunity to study online again, if and when the right course presented itself.

3 ways to future proof your career in an online world

Read the top 10 key findings from the survey here: MasterStart Workforce Barometer Report 2018.

The world is constantly changing, with new age technology engulfing the planet. It seems like everyone is glued to some sort of screen these days. It can be daunting to keep up with the times, and the new gadgets that help make life easier.

Have you noticed the impact of artificial intelligence or robotic automation in your industry? You are not alone! Our study has shown that a majority of employees are wary of artificial intelligence and the process of automation.

Fewer than 20% felt comfortable sharing their workloads with robots or having processes automated by AI. Yes, there is a real possibility that automation will take over human tasks, as organisations look to keep abreast with the ever-changing technological environment. However, we do have access to tools to “future-proof” ourselves against this.

Future-proofing

In order to future-proof your life and your job, you need to remain current in your industry.

Our recent MasterStart South African Workforce Barometer revealed that just 23.8% of our workforce felt completely confident their current skills will guarantee them employment in 10 years’ time. This suggests that people have a high awareness of the unprecedented pace of change and need for nimbleness and adaptability.

The constant learning of new hard and soft skills will entrench the flexibility necessary to manage the breakneck pace of the workplace and ensure sustained relevancy. Given the competitiveness of the market – which will only increase with the rise of automation – having a sought-after skillset is the best way to guarantee ongoing job retention.

Anyone, Anywhere and Anytime

The beauty of online learning is that it is on your own terms. Our study has shown that almost everyone (95%) believed that lifelong learning would help them remain relevant in their careers.

Of those surveyed, who have studied online, listed the following as the “big gains”:

1. Tangible results:

A salary increase, promotion, skills (to be more marketable), more experience and more opportunities.

2. Higher performance:

Better knowledge, keeping up-to-date, a better understanding of the way the workplace works, faster completion of tasks, and having to employ fewer people as they had the skills themselves.

3. Better motivation and soft skills:

Being better at dealing with people, the ability to explain concepts to clients, and overall improved communication skills.

The team here at MasterStart is dedicated and invested into a life of learning. We believe that the secret to current success and future wealth, lies not in the piece of metal in between your fingertips, but in the knowledge and experience, you gain from your life.

Professional facilitators make learning a breeze and continue to support you throughout your journey with us. Stamped with an honourable seal from the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

South Africans are concerned about their working futures

south africans are concerned about job security and employability

The economic and political situation in South Africa has all of her citizens concerned about their job security, especially in the years to come. A research report conducted by MasterStart reveals that a mere 23.8% of working South Africans believe that their current skills will keep them employed in ten years time. One undeniable fact about all South Africans is that we are resourceful, intuitive and most of all survivors. It’s exciting to see that our people are taking initiative, and finding new ways for staying relevant in a world where change occurs almost daily.

Adapt with technology

Technological advancements including artificial intelligence and robotic process automation have the majority of South Africans looking for a way to future-proof their careers. In a survey of over one-thousand people, the MasterStart workforce barometer uncovered a very real statistic. That was 95% of people agreed lifelong learning is the key to retaining relevancy in their chosen field.

A word from the CEO

Andrew Johnston, Former CEO of MasterStart says, “Our workforce is clearly concerned, but positively, our research revealed that people are aware that frequent upskilling and reskilling will aid them in remaining relevant and employable. Especially in a country where unemployment is an ongoing issue, it’s imperative that we empower people to future-proof their careers by making lifelong learning opportunities continuously accessible.”

The Raw Reality

Did you know that it is estimated that artificial intelligence could boost global Gross Domestic Profit by as much as $15-trillion by the year 2030? That’s a whopping injection into the world economy. Aim to be a part of this dynamic movement, with technology that helps make our lives and jobs easier, it is still imperative that we keep ahead of the curve, in order to stay relevant.

Today is the biggest challenge

It’s really tough out there; 80% of people surveyed believe that it is far more difficult to find employment, as opposed to ten years ago.

Factors to consider today

In today’s day and age, there are numerous aspects to consider in the South African workforce. If we zoom into it; macro and micro factors seem to be at the core of the current employment situation in South Africa.

The most talked about and obvious being the political and economic climate of the country. Increased competition, where even online businesses are starting to become over saturated making it difficult to stand out. Fewer employment opportunities and rapid change have also been noted as a hindrance to growth and development within the job market.

IT and technology jobs are seen as the most secure

It’s actually quite ironic that IT and technology-related jobs are viewed as the most secure amongst South Africans since these very industries are responsible for decreasing the demand for human engagement in the workplace. Our survey noted that 30% of IT and tech employees felt supremely confident in their skills and relevance moving forward into the future, or at the very least for the next ten years.

Don’t let age hinder your career prospects

Many of the survey participants claimed that their age and lack of skills were their biggest barriers to gaining meaningful employment, especially for people over the age of fifty. It is interesting to note that people from twenty-four up to the age of thirty-four listed a lack of skills as the most prohibiting factor in securing employment.

Recognise, Retain and Nurture Talent

Large companies need to take the lead. Corporations can help by becoming apart of the solution. By investing in their staffs’ education, they are able to upskill their employees to help them stay relevant in a world that is constantly changing and adapting to technological needs. The reality is not all managers are equipped to deal with people on a human level.

If you recognise this, it could be beneficial for your business to upskill managers on people skills. A short course in human resource management from MasterStart may just be the answer you have been looking for. Likewise, there are various courses on offer for any employee wishing to stay relevant in the modern age. The key to staying relevant and a cut above the rest is lifelong learning. This short-course will help you stay at the top of your chosen field, now, and far into the future.

It’s Not All Doom and Gloom

Even with the glum statistics and the current recession South Africa has slipped into, rest assured there is still hope on the horizon. Its uplifting to see that 80% of survey respondents were planning to study further in the future. Studying further allows you to not only enrich yourself but enrich your company. The majority of companies love employees who take the initiative to study further and enhance their skill set.

Look to study online

Studying online courses can help you receive that promotion that you have been yearning for, followed by a hefty salary increase. You owe it to yourself to stay relevant, which will ultimately result in a more diverse set of skills making you less irreplaceable, higher motivation levels and improved communication skills, which allow you to form long and lasting relationships with your company.

Johnston concludes, “Given the competitiveness of the market – which will only increase with the rise of automation – having a sought-after skillset is the best way to guarantee ongoing job retention.  This means using online learning tools to get to grips with AI and RPA in order to build on efficiency and one’s overall value-add in a business.”
